Gliding up to the robot in peak traffic
I saw them standing.
Not a rare sight in Durban city,
Beggars.
Their sign said the usual:
No food.
No job.
No hope.

They were deep in conversation,
Forgetting that they were a spectacle.
They were young
and white.
Frikkie and Bess of the Masabalala three-way stop
Locked in discussion about their patch of land,
Representing a new normality:
Equality in this country;
Equal numbers of princes and paupers,
Both black and white.

A sight at the same time
depressing
and bright.

The future is here.
