I do just love the Durban July. The fashion, the betting, the socialising and the horses themselves mix into an intoxicating cocktail for me. This year, however, I have had to sacrifice my annual day at the races in favour of my European Adventure (not a major sacrifice, I know but still, it is THE JULY) and so I will not be betting on the winning horse nor agonising for weeks over my outfit – I do hope that you will be, though as it is really a great day out at a Durban institution.

The theme this year is ‘A Royal Affair’ so expect lots of hats and Ascot-esque fashion. The Durban July website describes the theme like this:

You’re on the red
carpet, what will you wear?
No question about it, it’s a style love

Not pompous but grand. What’s on your mind?
A surprise,
anticipation, one of a kind.

A princess with poise, elegance and
A prince dressed to thrill, to win not to place.

Fine fabrics
that flow, luxurious no doubt.
Adornments that glow, desire to stand

The Kings of the Sport, in their finery fair.
Trooping their
colours, beyond compare.

The Sport of the People, it’s all about smart.

No matter your outfit, you must look the part.

Then the King of
Bling, the court jester supreme.
And the Queen of Gleam, she looks a scream.

Fascinators or crowns, or a stunning hat.
Watch from your throne,
think about that!

I thought I would suggest some of my favourite stores for outfits and accessories in case you are stuck:

The Space, in Gateway, the Pavilion and on Florida Road is always a sure bet for a stunning outfit.

Bonnie and Clyde in Bulwer Road (near the corner cafe) has some wonderful, unique dresses and accessories which will ensure you stand out from the crowd.

Lady Jane Vintage at La Lucia Mall has always got quirky and gorgeous clothes with accessories to match – all either genuinely vintage or faithfully vintage-inspired.

La Lucia Mall is also home to Katherin Kidger’s glamourous store and the more vibrant among you are sure to find an eye-catching ensemble here.

For great accessories, try Attitude in La Lucia Mall and the Pavilion.

If you must have a hat, Accessorise ususally has a few, as do Bedazzle at Gateway and the Pav.

Whatever you wear, make it fun and fabulous, because anything goes at the races.  Do let me know if you had fun!
