It’s going to be a bumper weekend for markets! This one is really exciting because it’s part of the festivties surrounding the COP17 conference which starts in Durban next week.

What is COP17? Simply put, it is a major international conference about climate change hosted by the United Nations. Essentially progress in dealing with climate change will be assessed, based on the Kyoto Protocol. It is going to bring thousands of delegates to Durban, many of them heads of state or environmental activists. There is talk of famous faces like Angelina Jolie, Leonardo di Caprio and Bono (who I met in February after their Cape Town concert -here is the post… still pinching mysef over this one!). The focus will be on global climate change, sustainability – all things ‘green’ in a nutshell.

Hotels are full and there will be road closures around the ICC – it is a very big deal and a great honour for our city to be hosting such a high profile event.

Saturday’s event is being called the Green Day and it is going to be fun for the whole family. The i heart market’s stalls will be there and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, who are just goose-bump amazing, will be playing and there will be activities for kids. Everything is free and it promises to be a great day out.

The i heart market sent an email out about the event and the explanation of why they were chosen to participate made me love them even more:

“Why us?
Because we fit perfectly into the COP17 ethos of sustainable, renewable, recyclable and local!
i heart market as a whole, has a lower carbon footprint because of our strict local only policy!”

Yay! Go Durban and the i heart market team! It is my birthday on Saturday and I will be swinging by – hope to see some of you there.
